To get right to the point:
Everyone has those vices and pitfalls that always get us. Some people call them temptation.
Temptation comes in many forms. Greed. temptation to make your self look better than you are. Everyone is familiar with sexual temptation. The temptation for more power, social acceptance or rank.
Sometimes temptation can be such a powerful force that I feel almost helpless against it. It's almost impossible for me to make any headway back to where I want to be.
I ran across this:
Temptation is a suggested short cut to the realization of the highest at which I aim—not towards what I understand as evil, but towards what I understand as good.
Chambers, O. (1993). My utmost for his highest : Selections for the year (NIV edition.). Westwood, NJ: Barbour and Co.
Chambers argues that temptation comes unique to the person being tempted. Odds are, you are tempted uniquely by what your personality is like. And if you take 5 seconds to think about it... you're always tempted not with what you think is evil but what you think is good. Just a distorted version of that good.
Temptation could be a reality check. It could beg the question, "What are you affirming as good?"
The good news is that in your moments of trial and temptation, their is a God that is extending a helping hand.
"For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted."
The Holy Bible : English standard version. 2001 (Heb 2:18). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
