To make no doubt about it, I love sports. Way more than I care to admit. For some reason, I love the branding, the sense of achievement and even the manly hits and grunts.
But I think the reason why I love sports the most is my competitive drive to win, to be first. It's an ugly side to me, but I'm being honest.
Actually, while I type this, the St. Louis Cardinals are facing the Colorado Rockies. Another baseball series in a long season, right? Not exactly. A good friend and future roommate of mine, Ryan, is a big Rockies fan. A win tonight would give me the proverbial edge, so to say. And a lose would make me subject to trash talk.
The point of this post is to say.... in the end, it's just a bunch of 20 year old guys throwing a ball around. If I were to storm off mad because someone misses a catch, wouldn't that say a lot about what is important to me?
I'm not saying we should not be passionate about sports. I am saying that sports need to be held in context.
David Goetz, author of Death by Suburb, says "Soccer is dumb when your wife is dying of cancer."
I would also hate for sports to ever get in the way of a healthy friendship. It's good to remind myself what's really important and what's worth fighting for. Maybe you should do the same.
Go Cards. and Go Rockies.
