When reading through the book of Jeremiah, a prophetic work found in the Old Testament, I find some disturbing language.
There is no way I can fully tackle every point that these passages raise... but here is the text and a few questions:
"from prophet to priest,
everyone deals falsely.
11 They have healed the wound of my people lightly,
saying, ‘Peace, peace,’
when there is no peace." - Jer. 8:10-11
and
"teach to your daughters a lament,
and each to her neighbor a dirge.
21 For death has come up into our windows;
it has entered our palaces, cutting off the children from the streets
and the young men from the squares." Jer 9:20-21
Questions:
Do we have the temptation to say "everything is alright/everything will be ok" in the midst of suffering?
Is it really loving to say to people, "peace, peace" when there is no peace?
I believe it is not loving to sweep the ugliness under the rug and act like nothing has went wrong. Why don't we hear more sermons about the depravity in all of us?
Are we all just faking it? I can't tell you how many times people have asked me, "How is everything?" and I reply... "good." When on the inside, EVERYTHING is screaming death, dysfunction and corruption.
Where is the lament in our culture? Why can't we accept that we are not progressing... we are fooling ourselves if we think "we're better than those pagans back then..."
The word sin seems so backwards to most people today... but how else do you describe this inner rebellion about everything good and our good God that has been so merciful to everyone?
