Mundane Life and Football...

One of the main reasons why I watch football is the "highlight reel effect."

Something about watching all of the big plays with a catchy song nicely chosen for background music makes football seem... epic. Watching a football highlight reel tells the story of the underdog fighting and giving everything for that last second play. Surely the game seems mundane and slow-pace when watching in real time...

Do you ever get excited for the next big thing in your life? Once you get a degree? Once you get that one job? Wife?

In the meanwhile, life seems mundane and uneventful... forever waiting for that next big thing to arrive.

I was talking to a friend after class and the subject of the incarnation came up. (The act of God becoming man in Jesus)

The fact that Jesus lived on this earth as a carpenter speaks volumes to this topic.

This Jesus, who is God, lived his life as a carpenter. Nothing sounds more mundane than living the life of a carpenter. Surely the carpenter is not the one who is the catalyst for change in his/her community. The carpenter is probably not the one who is on the inside of the biggest happenings.

Jesus redeemed mundane, uneventful everyday life. Maybe meaning and purpose is right here among us. Maybe what we are looking for is not on the other side, but right here.

Imagine that, looking forward to our 9-5 job or our next class because God might be up to something in the midst of the uneventful.
